One of my favorite conventions happened this past weekend, and most of you probably haven’t heard of it. Book Riot Live is a rather small reader convention held annually in New York City. It’s run by the people behind Book Riot—a website for book reviews, podcasts, and online community. Despite its small size and lack of superstar authors, Book Riot Live really impressed me with its welcoming environment, smooth organization, and thoughtful panels.
This was a year of major firsts for New York Comic Con. This year, the convention featured three offsite venues, including Madison Square Garden. While con attendance reached record numbers, the offsite spaces meant that the main show floor, hallways, and Artists Alley didn’t often feel overcrowded (the exception being a few peak times each day).

We at the Daily Geekette go to a lot of conventions, and love to enjoy them to the fullest extent. But for the younger audience who are attending their first con to those old timers who need a few tips to freshen up on their con-going skills, we want to give you the best insight into what and what not to do within the world of conventions. From Cosplaying, Panel Going, Shopping, and more – we want to make sure you are ready for your favorite up and coming con like you would be for the Zombie apocalypse (and trust me, with the amount of attendees, some of these cons can feel like The Walking Dead at times!)
So to help you, here are some of the DG crew with their batches of Geekette wisdom to get through the convention season ahead!
September 24th was a big day in the book world. At the same time some of my Daily Geekette colleagues were exploring Boston Teen Author Festival, I attended the Library of Congress’ National Book Festival in D.C. While there, I got to meet the new history-making Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden, just ten days after she was sworn in! I also met children’s author Shannon Hale (again) and attended some interesting panels, learning such things as Lois Lowry’s preferred brand of toothpaste and the difficulties of literary translation. After the fun of 2015’s convention, Daily Geekette just had to scope out this year’s TempleCon. A switch from February to August was only one of several noticeable changes at this year’s event. The con expanded, not just further into the Crowne Plaza Hotel, but outside as well! Vendors were now available in two locations: The Clockwork Bazaar, composed of folks cleverly advertising wares from hotel rooms, and The Garden Pavilion, a large outdoor tent with dealers at individual booths. My favorite, of course, was Leanna Renee Hieber’s table. Hieber is a talented author and actress (among many other things), whose name you may recognize from a guest post right here at DG.

A few weeks ago, I got to attend ConnectiCon 2016 – a convention that I hold really close to my heart. I love the unique mixture of nerdy guests they get, along with having a big con feel with (currently) enough space to explore and not get those tight and smelly issues that most popular cons suffer from. ConnectiCon is also an event that seems to pride itself on diversity, whether it be within the content it offers, or the incredible amounts of different people that are drawn to attend year after year. These things, and more, keep me coming back to this Connecticut homegrown convention without fail, and this year had some fantastic highlights that need to be celebrated.

If the names Anderson and Grimm ring a bell, you probably already know that their stories were cautionary tales detailing the most creative of punishments for disobedience. However, with the ever growing popularity of everything Disney, it’s hard to remember fairy tales being anything but happy. Today’s post seeks to amend this by drawing attention to three works that manage to find beauty in both light and darkness.
While the dark may not be your cup of tea, it certainly makes for some interesting twists and turns along the way.
As you can guess, the best days of most cons are Friday and Saturday, and this year’s SDCC did not disappoint when it came to the excitement levels of news. So here we go friends – let’s take a look at the most incredible, nerd screaming information that has been released to the masses from San Diego Comic Con 2016 over the past two days! ConnectiCon was the first convention I ever went to, back in 2007. I’ve been going sporadically since then and it’s interesting to see how the con evolves from year to year. There were some major organizational changes this year, some for the better and some for the worse. If you’re considering going to CTCon next year take a look at the way things were run, though keep in mind it could be completely different next time, as the organizers see what worked and what didn’t.
