Seeing as the New England weather has finally begun to feel like spring, it’s high time for hanging out with friends, soaking up the sun, and studying for those darn finals.
Or, we could just stay in and watch anime.
While I was hardly impressed by last winter’s lineup – with the exception of ERASED, of course – the current season definitely has a few shows worth looking into. I have a strong preference for anime featuring strong female protagonists, so the following list of three may seem limited to the Magical Girl genre. This is an issue I’ve had with Japan’s latest releases since, well, the beginning of their rise in popularity in the U.S. But nonetheless, Aggressive Retsuko, Flying Witch, and the third season of Sailor Moon Crystal have plenty of action and comedy to offer.
One hour is all it took for me to become absolutely hooked on a little show called Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. Having originally aired in South Korea and France as Lady Bug and Miraculous respectively, this groundbreaking CGI cartoon marks the first cross-collaboration between French, Japanese, and Korean animation studios. As if that weren’t impressive enough, Miraculous is slated to premiere in a total of one-hundred and twenty countries under big-name distributors Disney and Nickelodeon among others. Even before its debut, the show’s anime-esque PV had already begun accumulating a sizeable fanbase – followed by a stream of AMVs, fanart, and speculation. With the series now reaching its climax, the hype behind “Team Adrienette” and “Team Lady Noir” has grown stronger than ever.
So what exactly has led to such success? I believe Ladybug herself holds the answer.
Hey readers! Guess what!? Japan is putting out more cool stuff! Surprised? Nah, you shouldn’t be. But in case you want to know what some of that cute stuff is, here is a guide to the items that’ll make your fandom wallet cry with such intensity, you might just have to give it a hug. So for this week’s Simulcast Corner, let’s take a look at those items and have our wallets tear up in unison.
You know those rare instances where you don’t want something to end? These are my exact, blunt feelings having finishing the most recent installment of Sailor Moon Crystal. Could this be an episode with good pacing, character development, and animation? Shock. So brace yourselves for this week’s Simulcast Corner. It is gonna be real, trust me.
Welcome back to Simulcast Corner. This week, we’re gonna travel back in our time traveling, moon kitty-approved mobiles and discover the secrets of Neo-Crystal Tokyo. Yes, it’s time again for another Sailor Moon Crystal adventure. Will our senshi discover who Chibiusa’s parents are? Maybe even find out the meaning of life? Let’s discover all this and more for ourselves! So grab your Cutie Moon Rods, and let’s get this Moon show on the road.
I attended Anime Boston 2015 last weekend. I had loads of fun and very little drama, despite being one of 26,000+ people cramming into the Hynes Convention Center. This was the year of giant robots and heinous monsters, where Marco Polo was deemed dead and The Beatles were alive. I got to interview Mona Marshall, catch up with friends, and I actually managed to attend a third of the events on my To Do List! A new personal record!
Welcome back to Simulcast Corner. This week, we’re gonna return via a door to the 30th Century. Yeah, you know what that means – it’s time for another Sailor Moon Crystal review. Will it be yet another boring installment? Will this actually bring on the feels? At this point, who knows. But lets board our senshi-decorated Delorean and go back to the future, I guess.
Let’s get down to business, to defeat…. the Rabbit!? Yes, it is that time again to visit the ultra dramatic and somewhat hilarious antics of Sailor Moon Crystal, where we guess based on the episode title which senshi will get some focus, and then be stolen, and ultimately ignored, at that point in the series. But maybe something different is in store for everyone’s favorite 90’s magical girl? Or maybe we’re just in for another snoozer of an episode…. let’s take a look.
This week on Simulcast Corner, I want to take a moment to reflect on some merchandise that you all need to see. I will say, ahead of time, I am sorry for your wallet, for now it will cry all the tears of anime kawaii purchases.
Ah, Toei. I think it is about time you admit something that is becoming painfully clear: You love the heck out of Sailor Jupiter. Toei, baby, it’s okay to tell us the truth. In fact, many of us love the Thunder Senshi just as much as you do, but at this point, your favoritism is becomingly incredibly, almost laughably obvious.
