4chan Threats, Celebrity Twitter Support, and More; Social Media Reacts to Emma Watson’s Feminist Speech

EmmaBy now we’ve all heard about the threats from a despicable 4chan user to expose private photos of Emma Watson in response to her speech. He set up a website called “Emma You are Next” that now has been re-directed to a plea to shut down 4chan for the recent crimes against female celebrities that involved distributing nude photos of them without their consent. Celebrities that have been targeted in the past include not only Jennifer Lawrence, whose case received the most press lately, but also Kate Upton, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and Gabrielle Union, according to NY Daily News.

Update: NY Daily News reports that the whole threat towards Emma was a publicity stunt by those who wish to shut down 4chan for facilitating sexual harassment towards women.

In anycase, although we can be sure that there have been numerous and even aggressive and derogatory reactions to Emma’s speech (youtube comments are the first place I’d look for such), the amount of positive support is enough to give one hope for change. But will people still support the same message of equality when it doesn’t come out of Emma’s mouth?

HeForShe: Emma Watson Calls on Men to Join Feminist Movement

In the years since her performance in Harry Potter, Emma Watson has taken on many roles, including Ila in the film Noah and herself in This is the End. She embarked on her most important role yet, however, six months ago when she became the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

On Saturday, September 20, she gave a speech at the UN Headquarters in New York to talk about her vision of men’s role in feminism. You can watch a video of the full speech below or read a transcript here.

She addresses the familiar issue of women being reluctant to identify as feminists for fear of being pegged as man-haters. She combats this notion by reiterating what it means to be feminist: “For the record, feminism by definition is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.”
