Why I Am (Thus Far) Okay With the “Splash” Remake

For those of us who are too young to remember/know of Splash, let me tell you that it was a big deal. Granted, I was on the younger side of things when the movie was “popular,” but it still left an impression that changed my mind on what fantasy movies in live action could be like.

It starred Tom Hanks and a young Daryl Hannah, telling the romantic tale of boy meets mermaid, their courtship, and how they have to run away from the government trying to experiment on her. Though to a 2016 modern audience this movie might sound ultra silly, it (in my eyes) is a classic – one that jump started the careers of its leads (along with director Ron Howard) and gave Disney one of their biggest live action hits of the decade. So when news of a remake came about, I was initially skeptical at best – until some recent news surfaced.

Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda Cast in 2018 Mary Poppins Sequel

imageSince Disney is remaking every movie they’ve ever released, rumors circulated as to what films were coming and who is going to star in them. Mary Poppins kept coming up, usually with Emily Blunt’s name attached to it. I’m happy to say those rumors are true! Mary Poppins Returns will hit movie theaters December 25, 2018. Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda was also cast in this upcoming feature. He will write new songs for the movie, and will also appear as a new character, a lamplighter named Jack. Rob Marshall is set to direct the movie. Mary Poppins Returns will feature a whole new score. Continue reading Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda Cast in 2018 Mary Poppins Sequel

“Time Jump” – Alice Through The Looking Glass Movie Review

Back in 2010, everyone and their mom was waiting for the release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. It was the movie that every Hot Topic kid had fantasized about since their first purchase of a Nightmare Before Christmas wristband, and with every new image and trailer, the anticipation grew and grew. But some 6 years later, many viewers of the original still debate about whether Burton’s take on the famous tales of Lewis Carroll was actually good or not. But what cannot be denied is it made a bucketload of money, and as a result, we now have a sequel: Alice Through The Looking Glass, now directed by James Bobin and starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Sacha Baron Cohen, along with many other familiar residents of Burton’s Wonderland.

“Something There” – A Personal Celebration of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”

Something very special occurred in November of 1991. Although I can’t remember that period for myself–being exactly 1 year old at the time–a movie came out that changed my life forever.  It told a story that was “as old as time,” and featured a collection of characters, songs, sights, and sounds, that would take a permanent residence in my heart and shape me into the person I am today. And it just so happens that the movie in question is celebrating its 25th anniversary. I’m talking about Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

“We Are All Animals” – “Zootopia” Movie Review

Some of you might have watched the 2016 Oscars, during which Chris Rock asked some very important questions of the film industry and their dealings with a difficult topic that must be addressed: prejudice. Ironically, one of the movies that will be arriving into theaters this weekend handles the subject of the issue and how to fix it, in such a simple way, that it is hard to think of any other film before that has gotten it this right. Oh, and it stars a bunny and a fox. Meet Disney Animation’s Zootopia, directed by Bryon Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush, featuring the voices of Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman.
