The first Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise that no one saw coming. A franchise built upon the shoulders of a talking raccoon, a giant tree alien, and other outer space ragamuffins wasn’t exactly the typical Marvel package at the time. But in the summer of 2014, the world was introduced to this crew, and audiences grew to love them, making the obvious sequel one of the most anticipated of Marvel’s quite action-packed release schedule. So does Vol. 2 of Star-Lord and company’s adventures hold up to Vol. 1? Well, if we’re talking mix tapes, this definitely seems like the kind made by a mature college student than a high schooler.
Though I focus on analyzing the merits of the latest blockbuster or indie release, there are the occasional times where I go to a movie to simply (shock) enjoy it. That was the case this time around with Passengers – the latest big Hollywood Romantic Fantasy, starring Jennifer Lawrence and my favorite movie puppy, Chris Pratt. I knew the scandal behind this movie from reading about the script in the trades, and also knew that it had a pretty low score on Rotten Tomatoes. But a movie that made Jennifer Lawrence demand a big paycheck and top billing can’t be all that bad….. right?
Oh, I was so wrong. So, so miserably wrong.
So yes, if you can’t guess – SPOILERS AHEAD FOR PASSENGERS.
For the past couple of years, you might have been hearing about a little movie called Passengers. Filled with drama on and off the camera in every corner, this new Sci-Fi Action/Romance has been the talk of Hollywood since the day it was mentioned. But with stars Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence (who fought to get a paycheck that doubles that of her co-stars), Passengers has a lot to live up to, and the first trailer for the film certainly adds more fuel to that flame.
If you’re tired of seeing Chris Pratt everywhere, well I’ve got some baaaad news for you! Universal just announced a release date for the inevitable follow-up to Jurassic World. It was only a matter of time, considering JW set a new record at the box office its opening weekend.
Twenty-two years ago, a little movie arrived at the pop culture doorstep, and it was loud, fierce, and would become an icon of cinema. That movie was Jurassic Park, based on the science fiction novel by Michael Crichton, which inspired a film franchise, theme park rides, and more. Now, in 2015, the latest entry into the Jurassic series, Jurassic World, is stomping into theaters. Is it as classic like the original? Or does it sit just as awkwardly on the shelf as The Lost World and Jurassic Park 3 does? Let’s open the gates and see how this nostalgic park of dino-fantasy is doing.
Marvel’s cinematic universe has released a preview of it’s latest movie going creation to the masses, this time with the help of Jimmy Kimmel’s Youtube page. That’s right, the trailer that Marvel/Movie fans have been waiting for anxiously has arrived, and this time it’s got a raccoon. Meet Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, or what many have so far dubbed as one of riskiest comic book adaptation decisions ever.
Personally, I’ve never been a huge reader of Guardians. Sure, it’s got a really fun and wacky premise by most Marvel standards, and the characters are entertaining, yet it’s never been on my top 10 list or anything. BUT, when it comes to the trailer, hot damn does this movie look fabulous.
There are some weak choices in terms the editing of the trailer itself, but if the film is as sarcastic and adventurous as the footage seems, I’m down for a ride on the Milano! Guardians of the Galaxy lands in your local movie theater August 1st, 2014.
