On December 15, Warner Bros. Pictures released the first full trailer for the upcoming movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The screenplay of this spin-off from the Harry Potter series was written by J.K. Rowling, so we knew it was going to be good, but other than that we didn’t know what to expect. This trailer gives some new insights, but still not much.
The only plot point presented in the trailer is that when Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) enters America with a suitcase full of magical creatures, some of them end up escaping. Presumably the rest of the movie will deal with his attempts to reclaim them or at least do damage control.
There is also a woman in the trailer, who according to WIRED is a witch named Porpentina Goldstein, played by Katherine Waterson. Perhaps she will be Newt’s partner in this reclamation endeavor?
My main take-away from the trailer is the movie’s dark aesthetic, reminiscent of the later Harry Potter movies. The trailer is full of blues, blacks, and silvers with suspenseful music and only snippets of ominous dialogue. I wasn’t expecting Fantastic Beasts to be so grim because the book was rather funny with lots of snarky comments in the margins in the handwritings of the HP trio. It was, after all, written to raise money for the charity Comic Relief. The book however, was merely a reference encyclopedia of magical creatures, whereas the movie is a narrative about Newt Scamander (the fictional author of Fantastic Beasts), so really there’s no telling from the book what the movie will be like.
The Fantastic Beasts movie is set to be released on November 18th, 2016. We can’t wait.
