Whether you’re in school or not, and whether you will admit it to yourself or not, summer is coming to a close. So what should you do with your last week of freedom? Binge watch some amazing TV shows! We’ve compiled a list of shows with a limited amount of seasons that are action-packed, and will be sure to start your fall off on the right foot. Maybe one of these shows will become your new-found addiction and fuel a love of a new genre or fandom.
Fringe — This is probably my favorite show ever. If not, it is 100% in my top five ever. It’s brilliantly written, the cast is stunning, and every second kept me fully invested in the show. Fringe follows the story of Olivia Dunham, an FBI agent, as she begins to uncover things she never even dreamed about the world she lives in. It combines science and fiction into a believable web of fantasy and spectacle. I really cannot say enough good things about this show. It has me laughing one minute and crying the next. Watch it!
Firefly — One of Joss Whedon (of Avengers fame)’s babies. It’s a one season show basically about space Cowboys (and girls!) who kick some serious butt along the way. The writing is wonderful, as one would expect in a Whedon show, and the acting is on point. Nathan Fillion shines along with his cast mates in this fun show. And there’s a movie too! But be sure only to watch that AFTER watching the series…
Daredevil — The Netflix original series about the Marvel superhero known for his blindness. The stunts are ON POINT. Everyone is anxiously awaiting season 2. If you haven’t seen this yet, you are seriously missing out.
The Guild — If you’re a Felicia Day fan, then you’ve probably already seen this. Even if you’re not, go watch it! Felicia Day stars in this webseries based on her life as an online gamer. It’s wit and humor always keep me laughing. And rumor is that we’re getting a second season…
Dollhouse — Another Joss Whedon classic. Eliza Dushku stars as Echo, a woman who gets a choice: go to jail, or give up a few years of your life to the Dollhouse. The mysteries unfold around this futuristic world that are guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Be warned: for me it was one of those shows that took some getting used to. But three episodes in and I was hooked.
Lie to Me — This crime drama is unlike any other. Dr. Cal Lightman is essentially a human lie detector that can use his incredibly honed skills to solve crimes that no one else can. It is action-packed and intellectual, and it will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat.
Star Trek — Star Trek is the quintessential sci fi show. Contrary to its insane popularity, there are only three seasons, making it an easy choice for binge watching. This is a historical show that everyone should watch. Because of the show’s low budget, it can be a bit cheesy, but that only serves to add to its charm. William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy are the perfect pair in the lead roles as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, and their relationship caused one of the highest rates of shipping in any fandom.
Lost Girl — I would consider this one of the best queer television shows on Netflix right now. i would also consider it one of the worst. It is a great show to binge watch because it is addictive and will cause you to ship every character with somebody. This plot can be kind of all over the place but this aspect of the show can still be enjoyable because it keeps you on your toes and gives the show a parodical effect. It also represents a gay relationship in a believable way and has a main character who is pansexual which is not as common as it should be. I highly recommend this show that will cause you to click “continue watching” each time you finish an episode.
The Following — This thriller follows the exploits of a genius serial killer being tracked down by a detective who is determined to catch him and put him in jail. It is a non-stop action drama that will keep you in awe and terrify as well as fascinate you. It explores sexual and romantic themes that are rarely explored in mainstream culture such as polyamorous relationships. It tests the boundaries of horror / crime drama.
Better Off Ted — Better Off Ted is one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. It features a businessman at a shady conglomerate company who questions the morality of his career choice and cares for his smart and funny daughter while meeting some colorful characters along the way. I wish that it could have been renewed for another season but unfortunately it was cancelled. However, the two seasons it did have were strong and hilarious, while also being heartfelt and tear-jerking. Its addictive nature makes it the type of show you will want to watch over and over again.
