Hey, Geekettes! If you’re reading this, I am currently waiting in line, about to enter the Anaheim Convention Center, and experience the holy grail of Disney fandom: Disney’s D23 Expo. Incase you don’t know what the heck I am even talking about, D23 is the Disney equivalent to San Diego Comic-Con. From giant news worthy arena panels, to meeting your favorite Disney stars, and buying all the merchandise before your friends can, D23 is heaven for Mouseketeers all over the world. So before I go into a review of the event (which will be posted when I return, of course) here is a list of the things I am going “Zippity Doo Dah” over for this Expo.
10. Once Upon A Time D23 Dolls
If you’re big fans of ABC’s Once Upon A Time, D23 Expo will be offering limited edition dolls of Snow and Regina, in all their Enchanted Forest glory. Though I personally would have rather had Snow’s white warrior outfit than her wedding dress, both these dolls are stunning and their costumes are beyond accurate. Of course, as mentioned, these dolls will likely be in high demand, especially considering that there is supposedly only 100 of each set. To say I am terrified of the price tag is a HUGE understatement.
9. John Lassater Hawaiian Themed Shirt
This year, D23 Expo will be offering the chance for fans to purchase the most bizarre and awesome fan item to ever exist: A John Lasseter Inspired Hawaiian Shirt. Yeah, that’s right, now you can dress like the fan favorite head of Disney Animation/Pixar, in all his nerdy glory. The shirt will feature multiple Disney property characters, keeping with the theme of the 2015 logo. The shirt will retail for the slightly hefty (but not surprising) price of $99.95, and can be purchased at the Disney Store location at the Expo. Bless you, Disney, for now I can properly finish my Judgmental Disney Fan Meme cosplay.
8. Aladdin – The Making of a Classic Panel
One of my favorite Disney films, Aladdin, is getting a big ol’ tribute at D23 Expo this year, to coincide with the Blu-Ray release of the movie. The panel, which will take place on Saturday at 6PM inside Stage 28, will feature a fantastic group of guests including animators and voice actors from the film. A fan of animator Mark Henn? He’ll be there. What about Aladdin himself, Scott Weinger (speaking voice) and Brad Kane (singing voice)? They’ll be in attendance too! With surprises, tons of history, and laughs in store, this is gonna be the hot spot for Aladdin fans young and old.
7. Disney Theatrical’s The Originals Concert
Love Disney Theatrical? Love Musical Theater? Well then The Originals concert will be right up your alley. Disney is bringing together three of their fan favorite Broadway actors, all of whom originated their roles in their respective productions, to sing Disney favorites from the past and present. In attendance will be James Monroe Iglehart (Genie from Aladdin), Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins herself!), and Josh Strickland (Original Broadway Tarzan), who will be part of two special performances at Stage 23 on Saturday – 11A.M. and 2P.M.
6. Disney Legends Ceremony
Every year at the D23 Expo, Disney gives out their Legend Awards, a ceremony usually hidden in privacy from the public. With previous honorees such as the late great Robin Williams, animator Glen Keane, the Disney Princess voice actresses, and many more, there is quite a bit of buzz around the awards show this year. For 2015, the honorees range from iconic creators, to amazing representatives of the company. Most notably is George Lucas, Danny Elfman, and Susan Lucci, all of who have contributed to the Disney company in some way. But for me personally, I’ll be attending so I can root for Andres Deja, who (next to Keane) is my favorite animator from Disney Animation. The ceremony will take place on Friday in the new Hall D23 arena, starting at 10A.M.
5. Eric Goldberg Art Show
If you can’t tell, I’m a big dork for anything related to the Disney animators, specifically those that worked during the 80’s/90’s, who all put their unique touch on the films of my Disney childhood. One of those animators is Eric Goldberg, who is most notable for being the supervising animator on Aladdin‘s Genie, along with co-directing Pocahontas. The man is a genius in my book, and is gonna be doing something pretty cool at this year’s D23 Expo. Goldberg will be showing off his latest creations, a collection of Disney artwork inspired by the portraits at Sardi’s. There will be an exhibit of his art, along with a panel and book signing. Bring on the artistic feels, Goldberg! Bring ’em on!
4. Disney Theme Park Panel
Many rumors have been swirling around the Disney Theme Park fandom as of late, due to the multiple closures of sections within Disney’s Hollywood Studios, new rides in the yet-to-be-opened Shanghai Disneyland, and the highly-teased Avatarland in Animal Kingdom. So hopefully during the Theme Park panel at the Expo this year, many (if not all) of those rumors will finally be put to rest. Will we see the new animatronics in the Frozen ride? Will all those Star Wars possibilities finally see the light of day? Only time will tell.
3. Disney INFINITY 3.0 Preview
At D23 Expo 2013, Disney Interactive debuted Disney INFINITY, a gaming experience in which you can bring in your favorite Disney characters to your own creative world and adventures. This year, Disney Interactive will be back with the 3.0 edition of the game, with both a large scale panel and Expo presence on the Showfloor. I’m hoping, like they did in ’13, that there is the ability to get free play pieces for the game – maybe I can snag my hands on that Mulan figure I’ve been drooling over. Fingers crossed!
Every D23 Expo, there is always a buzz around the Live Action movie presentation. This year is no different, and with tons of exciting properties on the horizon (including Alice in Wonderland, Jungle Book, Star Wars and more) it is hard not to get caught up in the excitement. Personally, I’m hoping for news of the 2017 reimagining of Beauty and the Beast, and maybe even an appearance by cast members Dan Stevens and Emma Watson. A girl can dream, can’t she?
1. A Goofy Movie 20th Anniversary Panel
Many of you will probably be scratching your heads at this taking the number one spot, but for this 90’s kid it is for a good reason. I adore A Goofy Movie, the story of Goofy and Max, who take a father and son bounding trip through America. There’s tons of 90’s pop musical numbers, hilarious quotes, heart warming moments, among many more awesome things that make this little flick a classic, in many people’s eyes. So to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film, D23 will present a special retrospective panel, featuring a majority of the cast members (including voice actors Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden, Rob Paulsen, and Jim Cummings), and behind the scenes stories. If you want to be in a room with people that share all your similar nostalgic feels, including this lady, then come to the panel on Friday starting at 6P.M. in Stage 28.
So, are you excited for this weekend’s D23 Expo? Will you be attending or be patiently waiting at home to hear what is going on? What panels or news are you the most excited to hear about? Comment below and tell us your favorite!
