Final day of the 3 Days, 3 Quotes Challenge! I’ve got a good one for you this time, from one of the most profound manga I’ve ever read. Thanks again to The Gothic Library for nominating us for this challenge!
The rules of the challenge are as follows:
1. Thank the person who nominated you.
2. Post a quote for three consecutive days (one quote per day).
3. Nominate three new bloggers each day!
This quote, chosen by Books Contributor Carly, is from the manga Fruits Basket, Volume 1 by Natsuki Takaya:
“Mingling with people, hurting them, getting hurt by them…that’s how you learn about others and about yourself.”
This is said by the sometimes lascivious, sometimes surprisingly insightful uncle-figure, Shigure. He is speaking to his nephew Kyo, who is frustrated with himself for letting his anger issues botch a first impression. The whole conversation reads like a little pep talk for people with social anxiety, about how successful social interactions take practice, just like any other skill. I chose this particular quote because it has a much broader purpose of reminding everyone that sometimes getting hurt is part of having human relationships. It comes with having people that you care about. It may not be pleasant at the time, but it’s always a learning experience. Through break-ups, bad roommate experiences, ups and downs in friendships, I like to think of this quote and remember that what ever happens, I can grow from it.
Shigure and a younger character named Momiji have some really beautiful quotes about life throughout the series. I particularly like Shigure’s laundry analogy for stress and Momiji’s personal interpretation of the tale of the Foolish Traveler. If you want to read a manga that will simultaneously break your heart and make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, I highly recommend Fruits Basket.
Lastly, I’d like to nominate the following three bloggers to join us in the 3 Days, 3 Quotes challenge:
