Are you a Hello Kitty fan? What about My Melody? Little Twin Stars? Well, you might be seeing them and all their other Sanrio friends on the big screen soon! The highly successful Japanese company is beginning to work on their North American side to bring a whole new world of kawaii into the mainstream.
The chief operating officer of Sanrio, Reito Hatoyama, spoke during an investor and earnings report that the company will be establishing a new, American branch called Sanrio Pictures Entertainment, beginning in June. (SOURCE)
The company is planning on using this new division to work on animated feature-length films, and other media involving the world of Hello Kitty and her other ultra-cute friends. Sanrio is also hoping to create other films and franchises surrounding other characters within their catalog (which could mean properties such as Jewel Pets will get the theatrical treatment).
Considering the wide success of 2014’s The LEGO Movie, it is not surprising to see Sanrio want to get into the brand-based film competition. I could easily see them making a comedic movie similar to LEGO, or even something that has to do with a Hello Kitty fanatic meeting the characters in real life. Though any of these ideas could work, they could also fall into the failure category if put into the wrong hands. Personally, I’d love to see a screenwriter like Diablo Cody write a Sanrio animated movie, one that would please the adult fanbase and the kids equally.
Also, if this means we get a reboot of the Hello Kitty TV series, where Kitty and Mimi went on ridiculous adventures into fairy tale worlds that were apparently next door to their house, I would love it. And if somehow we could get Mindy Kaling or Tina Fey involved, I would love it even more. Come on, Sanrio, give us fans the epic, hilarious, ultra-kawaii media we deserve!
So what do you think of this new Sanrio news? Who is your favorite character? Would you want to see a new TV series with the Sanrio crew, or a movie franchise? Tell us your dream projects!
