Night 8 of Daily Geekette’s Channnukahhh Celebration

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading these as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them! I don’t love how little attention Jewish characters get for being awesome characters, in the same way that female characters do. However, one female character got to be beautiful and popular and Jewish, a rarity in films.

Cher Horowitz

Clueless film poster 2In the movie Clueless, Cher is queen bee of her high school, and she’s, as the title would suggest, clueless. Throughout the movie, she learns how to grow up gracefully (for the most part), and learns the true meaning of friendship.

While it is never explicitly stated in the movie that Cher is Jewish, it is made a more prevalent trait in the subsequent tv show of the same name. However, I have not seen the tv show in quite a few years, so I’m going to focus on the movie.

Cher is not geeky, but she has a big heart and is very courageous. She never succumbs to peer pressure, and hard core stands up for what she believes in. My favorite part of the movie is when Cher starts collecting things around the house to donate to a cause, and the things she’s got in her arms are caviar and skis.

I think Cher, as a Jewish character, is great, and I wish there were more characters like her on tv. She shows that not all Jews have curly brown hair and are religiously Jewish. Cultural Jews exist and should be more prevalent.

I hope you’ve had a wonderful Hanukah! Go be courageous and geeky!
