We’ve got one week without a new episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but Marvel gives us the gift of TWO action-packed thirty second previews of their next series, Agent Carter. This eight-part miniseries will star Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter and will take up S.H.I.E.L.D.’s spot Tuesdays at 9 while it goes on hiatus. For those two months, I’ll be reviewing every episode of Peggy Carter, so I’m also here to do a short analysis of our two new sneak peaks! Spoilers begin now!
First, a quick synopsis of the show: Agent Carter will follow Peggy as she founds the organization that would become known as S.H.I.E.L.D., with her both recruiting agents and trying to protect the world from the superhuman threats that endanger its citizens. Dominic Cooper will reprise his role as Howard Stark, and other cast members include Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill), Enver Gjokaj (Dollhouse), and Bridget Regan (Legend of the Seeker, and more recently, Jane the Virgin).
The early previews of Agent Carter (which gave us barely any footage) featured the baffling and nauseating tagline, “Sometimes the only man for the job is a woman.” In the 1940’s, yes, a woman playing such a major role in a secret organizations would be a huge deal, but this series is filmed and being promoted in 2014. Not only does ABC’s biggest night of primetime feature three shows each led by a strong female protagonist, but the most ass-kicking character on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has always been May. To imply a woman can’t get the job done is insulting and not the way for the network to promote its new show. Thankfully, these two new teasers deliver a similar message, but in a way that shows the in-series villains, not ABC showing misogynistic tendencies. “Agent,” indeed!
The other teaser passes the Bechdel test in under ten seconds worth of footage! It features Peggy talking with a girlfriend about work getting in the way of them going to the movies. (Isn’t that always the way?) We also get a shot of Peggy gaining some admiration from a woman working coms due to a fabulous red hat, reminding us that yes, Peggy is an attractive and femme woman in her role, not just a male character with his name changed. This, more than anything, is what’s drawing me to the series.
Granted, we don’t have a ton of clues about the plot of the series beyond what we already knew from these promos, but just watching Peggy kicking as much ass as she does has me EXTREMELY excited for the series’ premiere in January.
What does everyone else think? Will Agent Carter make the AoS hiatus worth it?
