7 Magical Creatures I want to see in Rowling’s Newt Scamander Movies

As many of you are aware, Warner Bros and J.K. Rowling are collaborating on a three-movie spinoff of the Harry Potter franchise, this one based around the magizoologist Newt Scamander and set in New York. You may remember some news last month about a riddle Ms. Rowling gave on twitter regarding the screenplay, which she wrote herself. That juicy tidbit got me thinking about what the rest of the movie will be like (since the book wasn’t much of a narrative but rather more of an encyclopedia). Below is a list of the most menacing, entertaining, or unique creatures of the bestiary, which I hope will appear in the movie.

Fantastic Beasts

  1. Lethifold — This is the creature that really left an impression on me after first reading Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as one of the most frightening creatures in the book. Also known as the “living shroud,” a lethifold resembles a rippling, self-locomotive black cloak but is really a carnivorous being that attacks and consumes humans in their sleep. Like dementors, lethifolds are vulnerable to patronuses. This mythical creature was so vividly described; it would be a shame not to include it in the movie. Even if it gives me nightmares.
  2. Billiwig — On a happier note, the sting of these jewel blue flying insects causes giddiness and levitation. Not to be confused with their near opposite, the glumbumble, an insect that produces a substance that induces melancholy. An encounter with a swarm of billiwigs could provide the perfect scene of comic relief, with Newt and friends floating and giggling through the air.

  1. Demiguise — Even the most casual of Harry Potter fans have knowledge of the demiguise, even if they don’t know it. This is because demiguise fur is what most invisibility cloaks are made out of (though, of course, we learn that Harry’s is an exception). Demiguises are peaceful primates that have the ability to turn invisible at will. Because of their connection to an item that figured prominently in the Harry Potter universe we are already familiar with, I think it would be cool if they showed up in the movie. Especially if we got to see an invisibility cloak made out of demiguise fur to compare to Harry’s special cloak.
  2. Kelpie — Kelpies are dangerous water-dwellers that can shape shift into various forms, the most common of which is a horse with seaweed for a mane. They are not creations of J.K. Rowling’s gifted imagination, but rather quite infamous creatures of Celtic folklore. It would be interesting to compare the version Newt encounters to other versions of the same creature, such as the carnivorous water horses of Maggie Stiefvater’s Scorpio Races, the movie for which was just announced recently.

  1. Nundu — The Nundu was another one I chose for its ability to terrorize. Described as possibly the most dangerous creature in the world of Harry Potter, the Nundu is a giant feline whose breath carries disease, through which it can wipe out entire villages. It is extremely powerful and resistant to spells, only able to be subdued by a hundred wizards working together.  If the movie wants to take a dark turn, scenes of devastation left by a Nundu would do just the trick.

  2. Occamy — An occamy is a feathered, two legged creature with a snake-like body and wings. It jealously guards its coveted eggs, for their shells are made out of pure silver. I can just see the CGI team putting their heads together to design this hybrid creature. It would be interesting to see what they come up with to make it distinct from dragons and other similar creatures.
  3. Puffskein — Lastly, puffskeins are so unbelievably adorable, they definitely need more screen time. The miniature versions bred by Fred and George, which they called pygmy puffs, featured briefly in the HP movies but we never got to learn much about them, like how they use their long tongues to pick the noses of their sleeping owners. They make fantastic pets, as Ginny can attest, and nothing could be cuter than a happily purring puffskein. I want one for my own, but since they don’t actually exist, I will have to settle for hoping to get to see them in action (or as much action as a little ball of fluff can manage anyways) in the Newt Scamander movies.Puffskein
Are there any other creatures you want to see make an appearance in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them movies? Any guesses on what they will look like or the role they will play in Newt’s story? Let us know in the comments!
